What to expect at your first visit

Your first visit is designed to establish clarity, comfort, and a realistic foundation for your pet’s ongoing care. This page outlines how an appointment flows and how decisions are made throughout the visit.

Arrival

Appointments begin at a scheduled time and are intentionally paced. When you arrive, you and your pet are welcomed into a calm, focused grooming environment designed to support ease and attention from the start.

Appointments are structured as one-on-one grooming sessions. In some cases, brief overlap may occur during arrival or pickup. When this happens, dogs are kept safely and comfortably while waiting, allowing each grooming session to remain unhurried and individually focused.

If New Client Intake Forms have not already been completed, you will be directed to do so before grooming begins. These forms provide essential background and help set clear expectations for care.

Handoff and Initial Consultation

Before grooming begins, we spend a few minutes discussing your pet’s history. This includes coat maintenance, prior grooming experiences, sensitivities, and goals for the visit.

This conversation is practical and direct. It allows expectations to align early and helps determine how the appointment should be approached that day.

Grooming works best when professional care and at-home maintenance support each other. The first visit helps establish what that balance realistically looks like for your pet.

If questions arise around coat type, brushing routines, or grooming frequency, you will be guided to the Your Dog education section for deeper support after your visit.

Assessment

Every first visit begins with a hands-on assessment. Coat type, density, condition, skin health, and tolerance for handling are evaluated before work begins.

This assessment informs us how the service is structured, what can be achieved comfortably, and how future visits may be planned. If coat condition or handling needs affect the scope of work, that is discussed openly.

This assessment also connects directly to how pricing is determined. Pricing reflects the work required, not a preset formula. For clarity, you can review the Pricing Overview and What “Starting At” Means pages.

Grooming Approach

Grooming is tailored to the individual animal. There is no fixed sequence or rigid timeline. Techniques, pacing, and order of steps adjust in real time based on how your pet responds.

Most dogs require approximately one and a half to two hours for a full grooming appointment. This time frame allows care to be paced thoughtfully and adjusted to the individual animal. Some appointments may take longer depending on coat condition, handling needs, or comfort considerations identified during the visit.

Appearance matters, but it is never prioritized over comfort or humane handling.

Comfort-Based Handling and Pacing

Comfort-based handling means your pet’s signals guide the work. Subtle signs of stress, fatigue, or discomfort are addressed through pauses, changes in approach, or stopping when appropriate.

Some pets benefit from shorter, more frequent visits. Others require gradual coat restoration or additional structure. This approach supports long-term success rather than forcing outcomes in a single session.

If your dog has age-related needs, behavioral considerations, or health factors that affect grooming, you may want to review Special Considerations under Services.

Pickup and Review

When your pet is ready, you will be contacted for pickup. At that time, you will receive a clear summary of how the appointment went, what was accomplished, and any recommendations moving forward.

This may include guidance on home maintenance, grooming frequency, or future appointment structure. When helpful, you will be directed to specific Your Dog resources for continued education.
