Base Pricing Factors

Size sets the initial pricing tier. It reflects the general space, time, physical handling, and equipment required to groom a dog safely and comfortably.

Size alone does not determine final pricing. Dogs within the same size category may require very different levels of work depending on coat type, coat condition, and tolerance for handling.

Dogs at the upper end of a size category, or beyond it, may require additional time or modified handling while remaining within the existing size framework.

Size

Breed Type

Breed labels offer limited guidance. While they may suggest general coat tendencies, they do not account for individual variation in coat texture, density, structure, or maintenance history.

Pricing is based on the dog in front of us, not the breed name on a chart. This approach avoids assumptions and allows care to be tailored appropriately.

Coat Type and Density

Coat type and density significantly affect grooming time, technique, and finishing requirements.

  • Short or smooth coats typically focus on bathing, drying, skin care, and finish work.

  • Long coats increase drying, brushing, and finishing time.

  • Double coats require thorough drying and controlled coat separation.

  • Curly or fleece coats require detailed preparation, structured drying, extensive brushing, and precision trimming.

Density matters as much as coat type. A dense coat takes longer to bathe, dry, and work through, even when well maintained.

Coat Condition Factors

Coat Condition Adjustments

Coat condition reflects how the coat has been maintained between visits. Compaction, impacted undercoats, and neglected brushing increase the time and effort required to groom safely.

Pricing may adjust when:

  • Coats are dense or heavily compacted

  • Additional drying or brushing time is required

  • Coat condition limits what can be accomplished comfortably

These adjustments allow grooming to proceed at a pace that protects comfort, skin health, and handling tolerance.

Matting and Compaction

Matting changes the scope of grooming. Mats restrict airflow, pull on the skin, trap moisture, and limit safe handling.

When matting is present, grooming may require:

  • Modified services

  • Staged or shortened appointments

  • Reduced cosmetic outcomes

In some cases, matting places humane limits on what can be accomplished in a single visit. Pricing reflects the labor involved and the care required to work within those limits while prioritizing comfort and skin integrity.

Handling & Comfort Based Factors

Handling and Comfort Based Adjustments

Grooming is paced to the individual dog. Not all dogs tolerate the same handling, positioning, or duration of work.

Some dogs require:

  • Slower pacing

  • Frequent breaks

  • Modified techniques or positioning

  • Additional support to remain comfortable

Pricing reflects the additional time and care required to groom responsibly. These adjustments are made to support humane handling, not to enforce compliance or speed.

Doodle Pricing

Doodles are priced separately using their own size and coat logic. Doodle coats vary widely in texture, density, curl pattern, and maintenance needs, even at the same weight.

Pricing is based on:

  • Size

  • Coat type and density

  • Maintenance history

  • Time required to groom safely and thoroughly

Separate pricing ensures adequate time is scheduled and prevents rushed or incomplete care.

Cat Pricing

Cat grooming follows a different care model than dog grooming. Cats process stress differently, escalate more quickly, and have narrower safe handling thresholds.

Pricing reflects:

  • Specialized handling requirements

  • Heightened safety considerations

  • Controlled pacing and observation throughout the appointment

Assessment determines what can be accomplished safely during a visit. This section addresses pricing impact only. Detailed explanations of feline grooming standards and suitability are provided elsewhere in the Cat Grooming section.

Keeping pricing predictable

Predictable pricing comes from consistent care. When grooming is maintained regularly and supported at home, appointments are smoother and require fewer adjustments.

Dogs maintained on an appropriate schedule typically:

  • Require less corrective work

  • Tolerate grooming more comfortably

  • Remain closer to starting prices over time

Long gaps between visits often increase labor, limit options, and affect both time and scope of care.

Pricing reflects the time, handling, and care required to provide safe, humane, professional grooming. Clear communication, realistic expectations, and consistent maintenance support the best outcomes for both pets and their people.
